It’s an epidemic that’s swept the world for almost a century. While it provides a valuable source of entertainment on the legal side, there are those who partake in underground events, and many times leading to the loss of life or property. Many people believe street racing to only potentially bring harm to themselves or any of the drivers, but unfortunately, onlookers, uninvolved pedestrians and drivers, buildings, and other property have been maimed, injured, or killed. The car scene is heavy with enthusiasts all over the world, with loyalties lying with any manufacturing company you can think of. The community is one that can be wholesome for friends and family of all ages, bringing people of all ages, races, nationalities, and hobbies together to give appreciation to one another’s priceless possessions. However, where there are modified cars, there are many who can’t resist showing off to everyone else their exhaust notes, how much smoke their tires can bellow, and seek those who would fall for the flexing claim of whose car is faster. Just like in any culture, especially with hobbies involving a lot of cash, drugs and alcohol seem to be a commonly mixed in with the fray, bringing a whole plethora of issues that span in the underground racing communities all over the world. Most states have stepped up their game within law enforcement to crack down on racing. California has become an example to the rest of the country on how much communities here dislike street racing, and the stigma of those with anything other-than-normal are at an all-time-high, especially with most states already containing strict emissions laws that prevent many from being able to modify their vehicle in many ways, in order to prevent air pollution and to discourage people from street racing. Arguably one of the bigger reasons street racing seems to be a big issue would also be due to the lacking choices in venue for the average amateur driver, as well as the strict rules put in place for driver safety, such as spending upwards to a couple thousand dollars for a roll cage, safety helmet, safety harnesses, and obviously modifications to the suspension. A lot of the issues that would be harder to crack down on altogether and fix would be the stimulation many amateur racers may receive from high-risk activity and gambling. One factor that is seen in street racing is driver age. A lot of the younger and less experienced drivers tend to fall into the temptation of wanting to test the capabilities of their vehicle, and likely do not understand the what kind of skill goes into performing certain maneuvers, especially if their vehicle was not made for the purpose of racing. Unfortunately, there really is no single answer on how we can stop people from street racing, aside from increased vigilance of law enforcement, as well as education on why it’s not safe and immoral. However, when Nongfu Company went to test its water in the Quality Supervision Bureau, the result showed Nongfu water was clean and had achieved the water standard. It turned out the news was distorted and afterwards misused by the weibo users. This example showed that it is equally easy for both the truth and fake news spread out through weibo and the latter would absolutely damage the social order to some degree. However, even if there are certain amount of restrictions on the contents people can post, it is too a large degree progressive compared to before. The limitations are primarily in political area, especially when the reputation and safety of central government were threatened by aggressive speech on weibo. Moreover, this weibo user might even be arrested if the post had caused a severely negative effect within the whole society. With the extensive use of weibo, all the information around them and directly affect them would spread quickly and has a significant effect within the whole society. A joke between to college buddies can be deemed sexual harassment by the company and open up a lawsuit if it ends up in the wrong hands. Because of this, companies have begun monitoring not only emails that employees send, but the websites they visit. Is this ethical? Some would say yes. A company has to protect its name and assets. Critique on Article “The Ends of Happiness” Essay

Dr Karl Giberson is a professor at Eastern Nazarene College with a PHD in Physics from Rice University. A man approaching his fifties at the writing of this article, Giberson’s solution to his mid-life crisis was to write an article â€Å"The Ends of Happiness†. His article was well written and he tries to impart his experiences with happiness to young adults. In the article, Giberson claims that happiness should be the end result of our efforts and he provides a compelling argument why we should not get caught up in our pursuit of happiness through materialistic gains. However, his arguments to back his thesis are inadequate due to an inherent contradiction in his supporting point and one unproven assumption in his article. Giberson (2006) uses the Candy Experiment with children to prove his point that our ability to withhold satisfaction leads to a â€Å"life time of happiness† (para. 5). He further explains that â€Å"unpleasant means can yield satisfying ends† (2006). This implies that our happiness will increase if we are able to set aside the things that make us happy, and work towards our goal. However, in his later argument, the author seems to imply that the happiest moments in his life, were times when he did not work towards materialistic gains. For instance, he claims he â€Å"lived well†, when he â€Å"left work early† and spent his time with his family (Giberson, 2006, para.12, 13 & 14). This illustrates his point that the most memorable moments in life comes from relationships as opposed to material gains (Giberson, 2006). While the latter argument supports his thesis, the former contradicts it by implying that happiness is something to be achieved through materialistic gains. This is shown in Giberson’s example about a student graduating with â€Å"greater earning power† (2006) and how this ability â€Å"is the formula for a lifetime of happiness† (Giberson, 2006, para. 5). Furthermore, Giberson’s argument seems to be contingent on one major assumption. That happiness gained from acquiring things, is less meaningful than happiness gained from spending time with family and friends. To illustrate his point, he cites evidence from his own memories. He states that memories gained from family time are clearer than the memories of â€Å"buying his first car† and â€Å"cashing his first paycheck† (Giberson, 2006, para.14). Giberson then applies this line of reasoning to back his thesis by showing us how happiness from material gains alone reduces our overall happiness as our social interactions decrease (Giberson, 2006). However, such opinionated evidence provides weak support to his thesis and even though he did not plan on writing a scientific article, using personal memories to validate such a major assumption weakens his argument substantially. In conclusion, Giberson has indeed written a well-structured editorial with many coherent and interesting points. However, contradicting arguments and one unsupported assumption in the article has undermined his thesis and weakened his argument. In â€Å"The Yellow Wallpaper†, Charlotte Gilman writes about a woman who suffers from temporary nervous depression as diagnosed by her overbearing husband who becomes her doctor. The husband, John, is condescending towards his wife when she questions his diagnosis. Therefore, to get away from the confinement of not being able to speak for herself, the woman secretly writes in her journal as a sense of relief. The woman then becomes fascinated and engrossed with the yellow wallpaper that hangs in her bedroom as a result of her isolation. She comes to the realization that a woman was trapped inside the wallpaper, so she must tear it down to set the woman free. The act of tearing down the wallpaper alludes to the fact that the narrator feels she†¦show more content†¦With John being a â€Å"physician of high standing† (Gilman), his role in the diagnosis of the narrator supports the claim of the stereotypical woman of the household being a â€Å"domestic slaveâ₠¬  (Treichler) to the head of the household, who is stereotypically considered a man. John uses his medical diagnosis to exert control over his wife by telling her how she is to perceive, process, and act in her life. The female narrator, at first, is compliant with his orders. However, by her continuous action of writing in her journal, she defies John’s course of treatment. She must be sly about her writing for â€Å"John will not allow her to gain possession of her own language† (Suess). The narrator knows the circumstances of what writing in her journal entails, but to gain control of her own life is worth the cost so that her husband will no longer have control over her. Despite John’s efforts to repress the narrator’s freedom, her writing in the journal â€Å"reveals [her] awareness that John continuously tries to manipulate her† (Suess). This awareness alludes to the fact that the narrator has now come to the realization that she is trapped and so therefore, she must escape.
